Quick Guide to Campari https://www.acouplecooks.com/campari/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/campari/#respond Mon, 10 Feb 2025 17:26:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=93542 Campari is a popular red Italian liqueur with a bitter herbal flavor! Use it to mix up a classic Negroni cocktail, and so much more.

Campari bottle

The bright red color of the popular Campari liqueur might make you think it tastes sweet. But its flavor is herbal and ultra bitter! It’s got a long history and features in several famous classic cocktails.

Even if you’re not a fan of bitter flavors, Campari is worth buying—mixing it into sweet or sour drinks adds nuance and complexity. In fact, as two cocktail experts it’s one of our favorite liquors to stock. Here’s more about it, what it tastes like, and how to use this popular Italian liqueur.

What is Campari?

Campari is a bitter Italian liqueur that’s an aperitif: a drink designed for sipping before a meal. It’s part of the family of Italian amaros (amaro means “little bitter”). One of the most popular of all Italian liqueurs, it was invented in 1860 by Gaspare Campari in Novare, Italy. It’s most famous for its starring role in classic cocktails like the Negroni and Americano.

Campari is bright red in color, which originally came from a dye made of crushed insects! The modern recipe now uses artificial red coloring. This liquor is sold by the company Gruppo Campari, which also bought Aperol in the 1990s. But these Italian liqueurs are more different than they are alike: read more at Campari vs Aperol.

What does Campari taste like?

Campari has a strong bittersweet flavor, with notes of orange peel, cherry, clove, and cinnamon. It’s one of the most bitter liqueurs used in modern drinks.

Are there any Campari substitutesThis liqueur is so unique, it’s hard to replace. It’s readily available at your local liquor store. In a pinch, you can substitute any red amaro or Aperol, but Aperol is much sweeter.

Why we like it

Campari features in many classic cocktails and some great modern classics. While it’s ultra bitter, it’s perfect for mixing into sweet or sour drinks to add complexity. It’s a great second tier liqueur to keep on hand outside of the big five (gin, vodka, whiskey, rum, and tequila).

How much does it cost?

Compared to other liquors, Campari is mid-priced. A 375 ml bottle costs about $20, and a 750 ml bottle costs $25 to $30.

While you can drink Campari straight as a shot or an aperitif, it’s most commonly included in cocktails. Here are the most popular Campari cocktails using this bitter liqueur. While the Negroni is most popular worldwide, we prefer the more intriguing Boulevardier or the fusion tropical cocktail, the Jungle Bird.

Refreshingly bitter and just sweet enough, the Negroni is a classic cocktail that’s equal parts gin, vermouth and Campari. Cheers!

  • Cook Time: 0 minutes
  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 1 drink
  • Category: Drink
  • Method: Stirred
  • Cuisine: Cocktails

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) gin*
  • 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) sweet or semi-sweet red vermouth
  • 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) Campari
  • Ice, for serving (try clear ice!)
  • For the garnish: Orange peel

Instructions

  1. Combine the gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari in a cocktail mixing glass (or any other type of glass). Fill the mixing glass with 1 handful ice and stir continuously for 30 seconds.
  2. Add ice to a lowball glass, and strain the drink into the glass (or you can use a cocktail glass without ice).
  3. Use a knife to remove a 1″ wide strip of the orange peel. Squeeze the orange peel into the drink to release the oils. Gently run the peel around the edge of the glass, then place it in the glass and serve.

Notes

*We like the Boulevardier even better, a classic cocktail that’s a spin on the Negroni. Substitute 1 ½ ounces (3 tablespoons) bourbon whiskey for the gin. It has a rounder flavor that’s more balanced by the bourbon.

Classic Sweet Tea https://www.acouplecooks.com/sweet-tea/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/sweet-tea/#respond Thu, 06 Feb 2025 19:29:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=71472 Master the perfect homemade sweet tea recipe! Learn how to make this classic with just 3 ingredients in 20 minutes. Less sugar than traditional recipes but perfectly balanced for the most refreshing glass you’ve ever tasted.

Sweet tea

Forget store-bought versions – the best sweet tea comes straight from your kitchen! Our perfectly balanced homemade sweet tea recipe brings out the bold, nutty notes of black tea while maintaining that signature sweetness.

The moment Alex and I perfected this recipe, we knew we’d never go back to pre-made versions again. Here are all our tips for making this classic at home.

Why this sweet tea recipes works

Sweet tea is black tea that’s sweetened with sugar, then chilled before serving. People drink it all over the world, but it’s most popular in the American South and Indonesia. It’s so famous in the Southern US that it’s almost like a religion! What makes this homemade sweet tea recipe special? It’s all about balance:

  • Just enough sugar to enhance the tea’s natural flavor without overwhelming it
  • Proper steeping time to extract maximum flavor
  • Careful cooling process to maintain clarity
  • Perfect ratio of tea to water for ideal strength

The result is a crystal-clear, perfectly sweetened tea that’s refreshing for summer afternoons and sophisticated enough for parties.

How to make sweet tea

Expert tips for perfect sweet tea

You need just three ingredients to make this sweet tea recipe! It’s quick and easy, with only a few minutes of hands on time. Here’s what you’ll need before you start:

  • Select the right type of tea. Use fresh black tea bags for the best flavor. Orange pekoe or English breakfast tea work beautifully. Avoid old tea bags, which can impart bitter notes.
  • Water: Use filtered water if possible. Bring water just to a simmer, not a rolling boil. Cool gradually to maintain clarity.
  • Sugar: This level of granulated sugar sweetens the tea just enough to highlight the flavor without overpowering it.

Variation—using alternate sweeteners

You can make sweet tea with whatever sweetener you like! While they’re not standard sweeteners, you can use any of the following in this recipe if you’d like to make it naturally sweet:

  • Honey: Honey sweet tea has a few notes of honey in the base flavor
  • Maple syrup: You can also use maple syrup to sweeten: it adds nuance but does not taste like maple
  • Agave syrup: Another natural sweetener is agave syrup! It adds a gentle subtle sweetness

Garnishes for sweet tea

The best part about sweet tea is hearing the music of ice cubes hitting against the glass, right? We love serving iced tea for summer entertaining, like patio parties, cookouts, pitch-ins, and pool parties. To make it look its best, we like to add the following to the pitcher or serving glass:

  • Lemon slices or wedges — add a squeeze of juice before drinking, as a variation
  • Fresh mint leaves — these add a fresh, bright look

Storing leftovers

Keep this homemade sweet tea refrigerated for up to 4 days, stored in a glass pitcher to prevent flavor transfer. Avoid storing near strong-smelling foods.

Dietary notes

This sweet tea recipe is vegetarian, vegan, plant-based, dairy-free, and gluten-free.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my sweet tea cloudy?

Cloudiness usually occurs from cooling the tea too quickly or using hard water. Let it cool naturally to room temperature before refrigerating.

Can I make this sugar-free?

While traditional sweet tea uses sugar, you can substitute with your preferred sweetener. Just adjust to taste, as conversion amounts may vary.

Can I make sweet tea using the cold brew method?

Yes! While we prefer the traditional hot-brew method for its fuller flavor, you can cold brew by steeping tea bags in cold water for 8-12 hours. Go to Cold Brew Tea.

Quick Guide to Licor 43 https://www.acouplecooks.com/licor-43/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/licor-43/#comments Tue, 04 Feb 2025 22:29:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=96299 Licor 43 is a Spanish vanilla liqueur that’s worth adding to your collection! Here’s more about it and the best ways to use it in cocktails.

Licor 43

Here’s a mysterious sounding liqueur that might not sound like a cocktail essential—until you taste it! Licor 43 is a golden Spanish liqueur made with a secret blend of 43 herbs and spices. The flavor is sweetly spiced, with notes of vanilla, cinnamon and orange peel.

It’s incredible in coffee, and it makes a mean mixed drink too. We got a bottle to make a Carajillo and became instant converts!

What is Licor 43?

Licor 43 is a yellow vanilla-flavored Spanish liqueur invented in 1946 by the Zamora family, allegedly based on an ancient recipe. It’s also known as Cuarenta Y Tres (43 in Spanish). The name comes from the 43 herbs and botanicals used to make it.

Licor 43 is now the most popular liqueur in Spain and widely enjoyed throughout Europe. It’s also popular in Mexico, as it’s the signature ingredient in a Carajillo (spiked coffee).

What does Licor 43 taste like?

Licor 43 tastes sweet and aromatic, strongly of vanilla with notes of orange peel, cinnamon, and cocoa. It’s herbal with a very complex finish! It’s perfect in coffee and other mixed drinks.

How much alcohol is in Licor 43? It is 31% ABV (alcohol by volume), so it has a moderate alcohol content. Compare it to 40% ABV for spirits like whiskey, rum, vodka and gin.

Licor 43 substitutes

The closest substitute flavor-wise is Tuaca, an Italian vanilla liqueur with brandy. You also can substitute any vanilla-flavored liqueur. The brand Galliano sells a vanilla liqueur, or you can even use Galliano L’Autentico, the yellow vanilla liqueur used in the Harvey Wallbanger and other classic cocktails.

Why we like it

Licor 43 is vanilla-scented, complex and pairs perfectly with coffee. From the first sip, we were sold! It’s complex in flavor, and so tasty we find ourselves dreaming up new ways to use it. In a word, it’s delicious. (Or, muy delicioso if you’re in Spain!)

You can drink Licor 43 as a shot, mix it coffee (it pairs brilliantly!), or mix it into cocktails. Here are the top Licor 43 cocktails:

Old Fashioned https://www.acouplecooks.com/old-fashioned/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/old-fashioned/#comments Sun, 02 Feb 2025 03:23:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=61562 Here’s how to make the oldest cocktail there is! This Old Fashioned recipe uses the classic ingredients and method for truly timeless drink.

Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is barely a cocktail recipe at all: just lightly sweetened booze with bitters. But it’s become one of the most famous of all classic drinks! The recipe dates back to the early 1800’s, before the words classic and cocktail were even said next to each other.

Everyone has their own spin on an Old Fashioned drink recipe: but we think this one’s pretty perfect. Here are a few tricks to making the best pristine version of this cocktail that lets the whiskey shine.

Old Fashioned ingredients

The Old Fashioned gets its name because it started as literally the cocktail. That’s right: the first cocktail in existence! The definition of the word cocktail was first documented in 1806 in a New York paper The Balance and Columbian Repository, calling it a “concoction of spirits, bitters, water, and sugar,” essentially a recipe for an Old Fashioned.

Once more cocktails came along in the 1880’s, they needed a name for that original whiskey cocktail. The “Old Fashioned” was born. The ingredients in an Old Fashioned are:

  • Bourbon or rye whiskey
  • Sugar cube
  • Water
  • Angostura bitters
  • Orange peel
Old Fashioned Ingredients

How to make an Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned recipe is perhaps one of the easiest great cocktails there is! It’s almost 100% whiskey, so you’ve got to love the stuff to drink this one. (If you’re not a whiskey afficionado, a whiskey sour is more up your alley.) The classic method for how to make an Old Fashioned is:

  • Shake 4 dashes bitters on 1 sugar cube, then muddle it with ½ teaspoon water. This is the traditional method, though many recipes these days call for simple syrup since it dissolves better. We like the nuanced sweetness of the sugar cube best: it really lets the whiskey shine. Don’t worry if it doesn’t dissolve all the way.
  • Add 2 ounces whiskey. Bourbon is sweet with hints of vanilla and oak, or use rye whiskey for a spicier finish.
  • Add ice, orange peel, and optional cherry. Add a large ice cube and an orange peel, making sure to squeeze it over the drink to release the oils. If desired, add a cocktail cherry.
Old Fashioned recipe

Step it up with clear ice

For a next level Old Fashioned, make a batch of clear ice! Clear ice is perfectly clear artisan style ice like you’d see in a fancy bar, instead of cloudy cubes from an ice tray. It not only looks beautiful, but allows you to cut a large square to fill the entire glass. Once Alex and I started using clear ice, it took our cocktails to a new level. Here are two methods:

  • Make it with a small cooler. This makes a batch that will last for many drinks, and you can cut it into large cubes or organic shapes. All you need is 24 hours and a small cooler! To do it, go to How to Make Clear Ice.
  • Use a clear ice maker. With the popularity of home bartending, there are some great options for clear ice makers on the market. We like this one: ClearlyFrozen Home Clear Ice Maker

Garnishes for an Old Fashioned

Both the orange peel and cocktail cherry are listed as the garnish in the official IBA definition of an Old Fashioned. Here are a few notes on the garnish:

  • Orange peel: Squeeze it over the drink first, which releases the oils and gives it a strong orange perfume. Then run the orange peel around the rim of the glass to give an even more citrusy first sip.
  • Cocktail cherry: The cherry adds a nuanced sweetness to this cocktail. Determine if you’d like your Old Fashioned on the sweeter side.
  • Lemon peel: A lemon peel can also be an optional garnish for an Old Fashioned, along with the orange peel.

Espresso Martini https://www.acouplecooks.com/espresso-martini/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/espresso-martini/#comments Sat, 01 Feb 2025 14:43:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=73743 Learn how to make the perfect Espresso Martini at home! Made with real espresso, vodka, and Kahlua, this classic cocktail combines rich coffee flavor with a luxurious frothy top.

Espresso Martini in cocktail glass topped with 3 coffee beans

The Espresso Martini is a classic cocktail that vaulted into massive popularity in the early 2020’s, and it’s easy to see why! Bittersweet coffee pairs perfectly with the rich sweetness of Kahlua to makes a frothy and sophisticated drink (we can’t resist it on a cocktail menu!).

As cocktail experts and coffee enthusiasts who’ve developed hundreds of cocktail and coffee drinks, Alex and I are excited to share our perfected version of this modern classic. Here are our best tips for how to make an Espresso Martini at home—including tips, tricks and variations!

Key ingredients

There are several variations on an Espresso Martini recipe. The original version had two types of coffee liqueur and simple syrup. Our version of the Espresso Martini balances four key elements:

  • Fresh espresso for authentic coffee flavor and the signature frothy top
  • Premium vodka provides a clean base
  • Kahlua and simple syrup in the perfect ratio make a balanced sweetness

The result is a cocktail that’s smooth, creamy, and indulgent, perfect for everything from happy hour to an after-dinner treat.

The story behind the drink

The Espresso Martini is a vodka martini made with coffee, known for its rich flavor and frothy topping. It was invented in 1983 by bartender Dick Bradsell in London for a customer who asked for a drink to wake her up.

Apparently the coffee machine was right next to the drink station, so he combined freshly made espresso with vodka and coffee liqueur. The result was an instant classic that’s seen a massive revival since 2021.

Pro tips for an Espresso Martini

The only part about an Espresso Martini that takes some time is making the coffee. Otherwise, it’s a simple formula of shake and strain. Here’s how to make an espresso martini:

Ristretto vs long shot

Step 1: Make the espresso using an espresso maker (or French Press). You can also use 2 tablespoons double strength coffee or cold brew concentrate. Place the coffee in the freezer until it is room temperature.

Espresso Martini ingredients

Step 2: Place the espresso, 2 oz vodka, 1 oz Kahlua, and ½ oz simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add 1 handful ice and shake vigorously for 20 seconds to create the creamy top.

Espresso Martini in cocktail glass

Step 3: Strain into a martini glass and garnish with three coffee beans.

Variation without simple syrup

Simple syrup rounds out the flavors in this Espresso Martini and makes for a balanced drink. If you prefer less sweetness in your drinks:

  • Use half the simple syrup, which still lets the flavors shine.
  • Make this Espresso Martini recipe with no simple syrup. Kahlua has added sugar, so combining it with vodka and espresso still makes for a sweet and balanced drink.

Tip: Another variation is making a Frozen Espresso Martini with ice in a blender (our favorite!).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an espresso machine to make an Espresso Martini?

While freshly brewed espresso is ideal for the most authentic flavor, you can use strong brewed coffee or even cold brew concentrate as a substitute. Just make sure it’s chilled before adding it to the cocktail shaker.

What’s the best way to get a frothy top on my Espresso Martini?

The key to a good froth is shaking the cocktail vigorously with ice in a cocktail shaker.

What are the three coffee beans on top for?

The three coffee beans are a traditional garnish for Espresso Martinis. They are said to represent health, wealth, and happiness. Some people also believe the number three is a symbol of luck.

Does Kahlua have dairy?

Kahlua is a coffee liqueur that’s made in Mexico. It’s made with rum, sugar and coffee. It does have some caffeine, but only about 25% as much as the same volume of coffee. The standard Kahlua is dairy-free, vegan and plant-based: it contains only rum, sugar and coffee.

What is a substitute for Kahlua?

You can also use other types of coffee liqueur, like Tia Maria or Sheridan’s.

Does an Espresso Martini have caffeine?

Yes! This coffee martini has caffeine from the coffee and the Kahlua. The espresso contributes 64 mg caffeine and the Kahlua 2.5 mg, for a total of about 66 mg in this drink. This is about 70% the amount of caffeine in 1 cup of coffee (95 mg).

What’s an Americano?

An Americano is an espresso drink made with hot water and espresso, also called a Caffe Americano. The drink can be made with either one or two shots of espresso, and varying ratios of water. Diluting the strong dark espresso roast brings the flavor closer to a drip coffee: which might be where the name originated! The exact origin of the term is murky, but it’s thought to have originated in the 1970’s. “Americano” means American in Italian or Spanish, referring to the coffee’s strength being closer to an American-style drip coffee.

Does an Americano have milk? Never. A true Americano does not include milk like a latte, cappuccino, or macchiato. You can add milk if you like, but then it’s not the true form of this drink.

How much water is an Americano?

Great question, and one that has more than one answer. How much water is an Americano? There are various ratios that are considered acceptable:

  • The typical Caffe Americano ratio is 2:1. That’s 2 parts hot water to 1 part espresso. This ratio makes the drink still taste dark and bitter, like a lightened form of espresso.
  • You can customize the water in an American to taste. Every barista and coffee shop makes an Americano differently.
  • Use 3:1 for a smoother, milder coffee with more volume. This ratio makes the Americano taste like a bitter drip coffee. (If you order an Americano at Starbucks, it will taste like this ratio.)
Espresso

Let’s talk espresso

How to make an Americano? Start with espresso. Simply using strong coffee will not do! This means you’ll need the following:

  • Espresso roast coffee: This is important to get the right dark, bitter flavor. Espresso roast is simply very, very dark roast coffee.
  • Espresso machine, espresso maker, or Aeropress: There are several ways to make an espresso! We use an espresso machine, which sits on a countertop. You can use a small manual espresso maker too: it’s cheaper and portable. Or you can use an Aeropress: it’s our least favorite option for flavor, but it’s the cheapest. Go to our Aeropress Espresso recipe.

How to make an Americano

Once you know about the water ratio and espresso technique: there’s not much to know about this coffee drink! Here are the basic steps for how to make an Americano:

  • Decide on your drink size. A 1-shot Americano can mostly fit in an espresso mug (shown here). A 2-shot drink is best suited in a latte mug.
  • Make the espresso. Use espresso roast coffee to make espresso using your favorite method: with an automated espresso machine, manual espresso maker, or Aeropress.
  • Boil the water. Use a regular or electric teapot to boil the water. The standard ratio is 2:1 water to espresso, but you can go up to as much as 3:1.
  • Mix the two and enjoy! Pour the boiling water into the espresso. Instant Caffe Americano!

Lemon Smoothie https://www.acouplecooks.com/lemon-smoothie/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/lemon-smoothie/#comments Thu, 16 Jan 2025 21:34:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=146144 This zesty and refreshing lemon smoothie is a citrusy way to kickstart your morning or as an afternoon snack! It’s loaded with vibrant flavors and nutrients.

Lemon Smoothie

Craving the refreshing, zingy flavor of lemon? Try this easy lemon smoothie recipe! This frosty, pale yellow puree holds a secret: a super citrusy, sweet tart flavor owed to a load of lemon zest and juice.

When Alex and I are in the mood for a sunny, citrusy drink, this is what we crave! Whiz it up with frozen fruit and milk in a blender, and it’s one of the tastiest, most satisfying smoothies around. You can even call it a “lemon pie smoothie” to make it even more fun!

Ingredients in this lemon smoothie

Lemon is a unique flavor for a smoothie recipe: it’s more common to see berry flavors like a strawberry smoothie or green smoothies. But this lemony drink is a fun and refreshingly healthy way to enjoy fresh fruit! Here are a few notes on the ingredients you need:

  • Lemon juice and zest: You absolutely must use real lemon for best flavor! You’ll need the zest from an entire lemon, plus two tablespoons of the fresh juice (no substitutes).
  • Frozen pineapple: Frozen pineapple is essential for the frosty texture and it adds a nice yellow color.
  • Banana: Room temperature banana is all you need: no need to freeze it! (Alternatively, you could use fresh pineapple and frozen banana.)
  • Milk: You’ll need liquid for it to blend! Use your favorite milk here, dairy or non-dairy both work, making it a vegan smoothie option.
  • Maple syrup: Just a hint of maple syrup heightens the flavors and gives it the best, sweet tart flavor.
Lemon smoothie

Use turmeric for color

Turmeric is a root used in cooking, part of the ginger family. It is most often used dried and ground into a yellow powder, which has an earthy, almost mustard-like flavor. But more than flavor, turmeric is also often used for color in recipes: in fact, it’s what gives yellow mustard its bright yellow color!

You can use turmeric here to make an even brighter lemon flavor! It won’t be noticeable flavor-wise.

Ways to add protein

This lemon smoothie isn’t protein packed, unless you use dairy milk (which has 8 grams protein in 1 cup). If you’d like, you can add even more protein: whether it’s dairy-based or a vegan smoothie. Here are some ideas:

  • Stir in Greek yogurt. Use ½ cup Greek yogurt and ½ cup milk for a significant dose of protein.
  • Chia seeds. You can add plant-based protein and fiber with chia seeds: 2 tablespoons chia seeds adds 4 grams protein and 11 grams fiber.
  • Vanilla protein powder: Protein powder works well too! We use this protein powder that has natural ingredients and a flavor that’s not too artificial. Just remember to dial back the maple syrup or honey, because protein powder adds sweetness.

Variations on this lemon smoothie

Want to change up this lemon smoothie with mix-ins instead? There are a few additions that go well with the tropical flavors here! Here’s what we’d recommend trying:

  • Add cashew butter. A way to add plant-based protein is nut butter; we recommend the flavor of cashews here to complement the lemon. Keep in mind this can also dampen the flavor of the smoothie.
  • Swap in frozen mango or peaches. Swap out a cup of the frozen pineapple for frozen fruit of another variety.
  • Throw in coconut. Throw in a handful of coconut (or toasted coconut) for a tropical vibe.
  • Add a handful of fresh mint or basil. Lemon mint and lemon basil are two tasty flavor combinations.

Quick Guide: What are Bitters? https://www.acouplecooks.com/what-are-bitters/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/what-are-bitters/#comments Sun, 12 Jan 2025 18:29:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=109857 What are bitters? Here’s a quick guide to cocktail bitters and how to use them in drinks, featuring Angostura, Peychaud’s, and more!

What are bitters? Angostura bitters, Peychaud's bitters

If there’s one secret weapon that should be in every home bartender’s arsenal, it’s this: cocktail bitters. This small but mighty ingredient is what makes an Old Fashioned an Old Fashioned, and what gives a Manhattan its signature flavor.

What are bitters, and why are they so important in drinks? Here’s what to know about this important cocktail ingredient.

What are bitters?

Bitters are small bottles of spirits infused with botanicals (herbs and spices) that are used to flavor cocktails. They’re essential in modern mixology, as they make drinks taste extraordinarily complex with just a few shakes. This is because they’re made with so many different ingredients and the flavors are not easily recognizable. The first bitters to be mass produced were Angostura bitters, marketed as a medicinal tonic in the mid-1800’s. But today the most popular use is in cocktails.

What are bitters made of? Bitters are neutral alcohol infused with herbs, spices, fruits, roots, tree bark, and other botanicals. Common ingredients in bitters include orange peel, gentian root, cassia bark, cascarilla, and cinchona bark.

Cocktail bitters are different from Italian bitter liqueur or amaro (plural amari). For more, go to Amaro Cocktails.

What are Angostura bitters?

Angostura bitters are the most popular type of cocktail bitters, manufactured by the House of Angostura in Trinidad and Tobago. The small bottle is easy to recognize with its unusually oversized white label (apparently a sizing mishap that the company decided to stick with).

What do Angostura bitters taste like? The flavor is bitter and spicy, with hints of clove and cinnamon. The exact recipe of what is in Angostura bitters is a closely guarded secret, but it’s made with gentian and other herbs and spices.

Angostura bitters were first introduced as a medicinal tonic in 1824 by a surgeon stationed in the town of Angostura, Venezuela. The German surgeon, Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, used local ingredients to make the tonic. In 1875 the production plant moved to Port of Spain, Trinidad, where it remains today.

What are Peychaud’s bitters?

Peychaud’s bitters are cocktail bitters most popularly known for their inclusion in the Sazerac cocktail, the official drink of New Orleans. Peychaud’s bitters were invented in the 1830’s by a apothecary in New Orleans named Antoine Peychaud. The brand is now distributed by the Sazerac Company.

What do Peychaud’s bitters taste like? The flavor is sweeter than Angostura bitters, with hints of anise and mint.

What are orange bitters?

Orange bitters are a type of cocktail bitters made with orange peel, first introduced in the 1860’s and 1870’s. Orange bitters were included in cocktail recipes starting in the 1880’s, like the original Dry Martini.

This type of bitters fell out of favor and was hard to find for many years, but they’ve made a comeback. Regan’s Orange Bitters was introduced in the 1990’s (distributed by the Sazerac Company). In 2007, House of Angostura also introduced an orange bitters product called Angostura Orange. The Bitter Truth and Fee Brothers are other brands of orange bitters, and each has its own subtle differences in flavor.

What do orange bitters taste like? Orange bitters have a distinct citrusy flavor from orange peel, with hints of cardamom, caraway, coriander, anise, and cinnamon.

What else to make with orange bitters? Go to Top Orange Bitters Cocktails.

Other types of bitters

The most popular types of bitters are Angostura bitters, Peychaud’s bitters, and orange bitters. But you can find lots of other flavors! Fee Brothers has a line of bitters that includes flavors like Celery, Grapefruit, Chocolate, Peach, Lemon, Cherry, Rhubarb, Plum, and Mint.

How much is a dash of bitters?

What are bitters dashes in terms of quantity? One dash of bitters is somewhere between ⅛ teaspoon and ¼ teaspoon. Most drinks use 1 to 2 dashes. To add bitters to a drink, tip the bottle right into the drink and give it a good solid shake.

How much alcohol is in bitters?

Most bitters are 35 to 45% ABV (alcohol by volume), so they have a relatively high alcohol content. However, they’re used in such small quantities that the alcohol they add to a drink is nearly negligible.

Adding 2 dashes bitters to a drink is ¼ teaspoon or 0.04 ounces. Multiply that by the alcohol by volume, 0.45, and it’s a miniscule 0.01 ounces alcohol.

Are there any bitters substitutes?

Want to substitute for bitters if you don’t have them? You can use small amounts of herbal bitter liqueurs like Campari, absinthe, or Fernet-Branca to stand in for cocktail bitters in drinks. Go to Best Bitters Substitute for more details.

Pineapple Margarita https://www.acouplecooks.com/pineapple-margarita-recipe/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/pineapple-margarita-recipe/#comments Fri, 10 Jan 2025 16:34:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=81848 This pineapple margarita is a tropical spin on the classic! The winning combination of pineapple, tequila, and lime makes a refreshing cocktail bursting with flavor.

Pineapple Margarita in rocks glass with pineapple garnish.

Here’s a tropical drink that marries the perfect combination of pineapple, tequila and lime: the pineapple margarita! Over the years, Alex and I have become experts in all the margarita recipes, from the classic to the more funky and off-the-wall.

Here, sweet pineapple goes hand in hand with the sharp bite of the tequila and zingy lime. Add Cointreau orange liqueur to the mix, and it’s a burst of tropical flavor. It’s just as easy as our classic margarita but makes an even bolder statement (we think).

Ingredients in a pineapple margarita

The classic margarita recipe was invented back in the 1930’s, a simple mix of lime juice, orange liqueur (triple sec or Cointreau), and tequila. We’re margarita purists so this pineapple margarita is spin on that classic formula, where the sweetness of the pineapple juice and the hint of sugar in the Cointreau create the perfect sweet tart flavor. If you prefer a sweeter margarita, you can always add simple syrup or agave syrup. Here are the ingredients you need for a pineapple margarita:

  • Pineapple juice
  • Tequila (use blanco or reposado)
  • Cointreau (or triple sec)
  • Fresh lime juice

Tips and tricks for this recipe

Here are a few quick tips for a pineapple margarita (or go to the recipe):

  1. Ice and a salt rim: This pineapple margarita is “on the rocks,” meaning it’s served over ice. It’s a classic “shaken” cocktail you can mix up in a cocktail shaker. The salt rim is optional, but it adds just the right searing saltiness to each sip. Using clear ice gives it a craft cocktail feel.
  2. Garnish ideas: We like to garnish with a fresh pineapple wedge, but that’s just for looks! You can also use a lime wedge or even a drink umbrella.
  3. Pitcher variation: Instead of making single drinks, mix up a big pitcher of 8 servings at once. In the recipe below, use cups instead of ounces for the measurement, pour it into a big pitcher and stir in 3 handfuls ice.
Pineapple margarita

The best tequila for margaritas

You can use any type of tequila in pineapple margaritas. Our rule of thumb is to buy a mid-price range bottle: the price usually corresponds to the quality of liquor! Look for 750 ml bottles in the range of $22 to $35. You can use either blanco or reposado tequila here.

  • Tequila blanco (or “new” tequila) has been aged less than 2 months and has a strong, straightforward flavor.
  • Tequila reposado (“rested” in Spanish) is aged longer, from 2 to 12 months. It has a more nuanced flavor, with notes of oak and vanilla.

Frequently asked questions

My pineapple margarita is too sweet or tart! How can I adjust it?

Taste your margarita as you go. If it’s too sweet, add a little more lime juice for tartness. You can also add a bit of simple syrup or agave nectar in the recipe.

What’s the best way to rim a glass for a pineapple margarita?

For a classic touch, rim your glass with coarse kosher salt. Or, try our homemade margarita salt for the salt rim: the green and orange from the citrus peel look beautiful against the yellow drink.

Tajín is another great option for the rim, a Mexican seasoning blend that adds a burst of tangy, spicy flavor.

Can I make a frozen pineapple margarita?

Yes, go to our Frozen Margarita recipe and substitute 4 cups frozen pineapple for the ice.

Raspberry Smoothie https://www.acouplecooks.com/raspberry-smoothie/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/raspberry-smoothie/#comments Fri, 10 Jan 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=72288 Here’s how to make the perfect raspberry smoothie! It’s got the best sweet tart flavor, frosty texture, and vibrant color.

Raspberry smoothie

Here’s one of our very best smoothies—and that’s saying something, since we have over 50 smoothie recipes! This beautiful raspberry smoothie has a brilliant sweet tart flavor, a creamy frosty texture, and stunning bright color.

This one was an instant favorite in our house—and now we make on repeat! It’s one of the most refreshing smoothies you’ll find. It doubles as a healthy treat: just like our creamy peach smoothie, it’s the perfect ending to a meal.

Ingredients in this raspberry smoothie

Sure, you can throw raspberries in a blender with milk and ice. But want the perfect raspberry smoothie? Each one of these components are optimized to perfection. Here’s what you need:

  • Frozen raspberries: For the best icy texture, we recommend using frozen raspberries. If you’ve got fresh berries from the farmers market, consider freezing them (which is also a great way to preserve them). You can also swap in fresh berries if you use a frozen banana.
  • Banana: A banana amps up the sweetness and adds a beautiful creaminess.
  • Greek yogurt: Yogurt adds creaminess and a bit of protein. For vegan and dairy-free, you can use oat milk instead.
  • Water and milk: Using part water helps to intensify the pink flavor.
  • Maple syrup or honey: Add a little sweetener for just the right pop.
  • Ice: Ice adds the final frothy texture.
Raspberry smoothie

Ways to add protein

Want to add even more protein to this raspberry smoothie? Here are a few ideas:

  • Use more Greek yogurt: Yogurt adds quite a bit of protein. Use ½ cup instead of ¼ cup Greek yogurt. Note that the color will be lighter and less vibrant.
  • Add cashew butter or almond butter. A cashew flavor or almond flavor goes well with raspberries. Use about 1 tablespoon, 2 for a stronger flavor. This addition also dulls the flavor a bit.

Flavor mix-ins

This raspberry smoothie tastes amazing as is. But if you’d like it mix it up even more, we’ve got answers! Here are some ideas for ways to make it even tastier:

  • Mint or basil. Add a few fresh mint or basil leaves for an herbaceous spin.
  • Coconut. Throw in a handful of coconut to the mix (or toasted coconut).
  • Ginger. Add ½ teaspoon grated ginger to the mix for a spicy brightness.
  • Mango or pineapple. Substitute 1 cup of the frozen raspberries for 1 cup frozen mango or pineapple. This will vary the color a bit as well.

Smoothie storage

Smoothies are best eaten immediately. But this raspberry smoothie can last for 1 day refrigerated, stored in a sealed container or a mason jar with the lid on. If it starts to separate, simply shake it up before drinking!

Dietary notes

This raspberry smoothie recipe is vegetarian and gluten-free. For vegan, plant-based, and dairy-free, see the variation listed in the Notes below.

This creamy puree stars pineapple, banana and coconut for one deliciously sweet healthy treat.

Pina colada smoothie

As two drink experts who have created over 50 smoothie recipes, Alex and I thought we’d found all the best ones—until this. Try this pina colada smoothie!

This healthy treat is so much fun, delightfully fresh and creamy, with a tropical flavor that’s reminiscent of the popular pina colada cocktail. It uses only 4 ingredients and tastes so delicious, you’ll be whipping it up on repeat for snacks and treats! We especially love it when we’re craving something sweet but want something light and healthy.

We made this pina colada smoothie and it was a huge hit! So creamy and decadent but also not too heavy. This is a lovely and refreshing treat. We had one verrry brown banana that needed rescuing, and it added the perfect amount of sweetness. -Tanvee

Ingredients in this pina colada smoothie

All you need is 4 ingredients here, plus water and ice! You don’t even need to worry about freezing a banana (which we always forget!). Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Frozen pineapple: This provides the creamy, thick backbone of the smoothie.
  • Banana: Use a fresh banana; it adds natural sweetness and creaminess to the puree (though banana is not part of a traditional pina colada cocktail).
  • Shredded coconut: Just a bit of shredded unsweetened coconut infuses the coconut flavor.
  • Coconut milk: For the best coconut flavor and creaminess, use canned coconut milk, not coconut milk sold in cartons. If all you have is carton coconut milk, you can add additional shredded coconut to taste.

Protein adders

If you’re looking to eat this pina colada smoothie for breakfast or as part of a meal, you may want to add some protein to make it more filling. Here are a few ideas:

Storing leftovers

This pina colada smoothie is best the day it is made, but you can also make it in advance! It stores up 1 to 2 days refrigerated. If it separates, give it a stir before serving.

Gin Fizz Cocktail https://www.acouplecooks.com/gin-fizz-cocktail/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/gin-fizz-cocktail/#comments Mon, 06 Jan 2025 22:01:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=42913 Try the refreshing gin fizz: sweet and tangy with a frothy egg white foam topping. This classic cocktail is simple to make at home with our step-by-step guide on how to get tall and fluffy foam!

Gin fizz cocktail

Ever had a gin fizz? To us, it’s one of the best uses of a bottle of gin around (really). This classic cocktail is perfectly balanced, both sweet and tart with a pop of lemon and a botanical finish. Add to that a frothy egg white foam topping, which adds a creamy smoothness to each sip.

Even better, it takes only 5 minutes to shake up! As two cocktail experts, this was one of the first cocktails we learned to make. We love tangy cocktails like margaritas and whiskey sours, so this tangy sweet fizzy drink is right up our alley.

Gin fizz ingredients

The gin fizz is a classic cocktail made with gin, lemon, simple syrup and soda water. The first printed recipe was in an 1876 cocktail book, and the drink became very popular in the 1900’s. It’s a textbook sour cocktail that combines citrus, liquor and sweetener, with an optional frothy egg white foam topping. The gin fizz ingredients are:

  • 2 oz gin
  • ¾ oz lemon juice
  • ½ oz simple syrup
  • 1 egg white
  • Soda water

How the egg white foam works

Bartenders have been adding egg whites to cocktails since the 1860’s: they add a frothy texture and give each sip a creamy rich flavor, balancing the sharpness of the citrus. For the gin fizz you’ll do what’s called a dry shake to make the frothy layer of foam (like with other classic egg white cocktails like the Boston Sour or Pisco Sour). Here’s how it works:

  • Shake the drink ingredients without ice first. This lets the protein in the egg begin to form foam, instead of being diluted by the ice.
  • Add ice and shake again. This cools the drink and strengthens the foam. Strain it into the glass and you’ll get a thick, white frothy layer.
  • A simple trick for increasing the foam in a gin fizz: Add a spring to the inside of the cocktail shaker! This helps to agitate the ingredients even more (this really works: we’ve tried it!).
How to make a gin fizz

Best type of gin

For a gin fizz, don’t buy the cheapest gin you can find. Try to invest in a mid-price range gin: the drink will only taste as good as the gin you invest in! Here are a few types we like:

  • Malfy and Beefeater London Dry have a developed, botanical flavor that blends well in cocktails.
  • Locally distilled gin is a great option. In Indianapolis, we like 8th Day Distillery, Hotel Tango, and Big Heart Gin.
  • Steer clear of strong flavored sipping gins. For us this includes brands like Tanqueray (very floral) and Opihr (spice-forward), which can overpower the subtlety in gin drinks.

There’s lots more you can do with gin, from classic Gin and Tonic to a Gin Gimlet. See our top Gin Cocktails.

Tip for the soda water

You can buy soda water or club soda for a gin fizz, but you can also make it at home! To make soda water, you can use a home carbonator (we use our SodaStream).

Instructions

  1. Place the gin, lemon juice, syrup and egg white in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds.
  2. Fill the shaker with ice and shake for 30 seconds until cold.
  3. Strain the drink into a glass and top with the soda water; the egg white foam forms on top. If desired, garnish with a lemon twist. Serve immediately.

Notes

*Maple syrup is our favorite substitute for simple syrup in a cocktail; it adds subtle caramel notes without tasting like maple.

**For vegan, substitute 2 tablespoons aquafaba, the liquid from a can of chickpeas.

Egg white substitutes

If you prefer not using raw eggs in your cocktails, you can substitute aquafaba, the liquid in a can of chickpeas. It’s a starchy liquid that works perfectly as an egg white substitute.

Use 2 tablespoons of aquafaba in this gin fizz recipe as an equivalent to an egg white. Another popular egg white substitute for cocktails is this Fee Brothers Cocktail Foamer.

Variations on the gin fizz

There are a few famous variations on the gin fizz you must try if you love this recipe:

  • The Ramos Gin Fizz was invented in New Orleans in the 1880’s and tastes like lemon meringue pie. It adds lime juice, heavy cream and orange blossom water to the classic formula.
  • The Sloe Gin Fizz is a fruity spin on the classic, swapping out the gin for sloe gin.
  • A Tom Collins has the same ingredients without the egg white, and a Gin Sour has the same ingredients without the soda water.
  • A Bee’s Knees has similar ingredients, but swaps in honey syrup for simple syrup.

Vegan Hot Chocolate https://www.acouplecooks.com/vegan-hot-chocolate/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/vegan-hot-chocolate/#comments Sun, 05 Jan 2025 17:30:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=113522 This rich, creamy vegan hot chocolate recipe takes just 5 minutes and uses simple ingredients you likely have in your pantry! Here are the secrets to a dairy free rendition of this cozy drink.

Vegan Hot Chocolate

Guess what: turns out the perfect vegan hot chocolate doesn’t have to be complicated. This rich, creamy dairy-free hot chocolate recipe takes just 5 minutes and uses simple ingredients you likely have in your pantry.

Alex and I have tested this recipe over and over and here’s what we found. A combination of oat milk, dark chocolate, and cocoa powder creates the perfect balance of richness and chocolate flavor!

Why this recipe works

Alex and I have made many different hot chocolate recipes, from our classic homemade hot chocolate to peppermint hot chocolate and even boozy spiked hot chocolate. Our son is lactose intolerant so we wanted to create a vegan hot chocolate version for him, too! Here’s what’s create about this recipe:

  • Oat milk provides the ideal creamy base without watery texture or overwhelming flavors
  • Dark chocolate adds richness and body
  • Simple pantry ingredients mean there are no specialty items needed
  • Quick 5-minute preparation
  • Customizable with various toppings and mix-ins!

Key ingredients for vegan hot chocolate

The best vegan hot chocolate starts with quality ingredients. While you can use any plant-based milk, we’ve tested extensively and found oat milk delivers superior results. Its creamy texture and neutral flavor create the perfect base.

Dark chocolate is naturally vegan and adds essential richness. While you can make this recipe with just cocoa powder, we’ve found that adding adding real chocolate elevates it from good to exceptional. The combination creates that classic hot chocolate experience everyone loves—especially our son!

Vegan Hot Chocolate

Expert tips

Once you’ve got the right ingredients, this vegan hot chocolate recipe takes just 5 minutes! All you have to do is heat up all the ingredients and melt in the chocolate! Here’s what to know about the process:

  • Whisk cocoa powder with a small amount of milk first to prevent lumps
  • Choose high-quality dark chocolate for the best flavor
  • Avoid almond milk (too thin) and coconut milk (too strong)
  • Heat gently – don’t let it boil
  • For extra indulgence, top it with vegan whipped cream or marshmallows!

A few variations

This vegan hot chocolate is delicious as is, but you can add toppings or mix-ins to mix it up a bit. Aside from whipped cream or marshmallows, try topping with cocoa powder, shaved dark chocolate, or peppermint candies.

You can also add peppermint extract for a festive twist (use ⅛ teaspoon), or spike it with your favorite liqueur for an adult version. We like using 2 ounces of bourbon or rum.

Dietary notes

This vegan hot chocolate recipe is vegetarian, vegan, plant-based, dairy-free, and gluten-free

Pickle Martini https://www.acouplecooks.com/pickle-martini/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/pickle-martini/#respond Tue, 17 Dec 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=167715 Calling all pickle lovers! Here’s the cocktail of your dreams: the dill pickle martini! Essentially a dirty martini with pickle juice, it’s a fun spin on the classic that infuses a briny, salty flavor.

Pickle Martini

The other day we were out at a restaurant and something on the cocktail menu sparked our interest: a “pickle martini.” Since Alex and I are lovers of all things dill pickles and authors of hundreds of cocktail recipes, of course we had to give it a try.

This drink tastes exactly how it sounds—adding pickle juice to a dry martini infuses it with briny, salty flavor. It makes for one irresistible sip (at least for pickle lovers!). Here’s how to make one for yourself!

Ingredients in a pickle martini

A pickle martini is simply a dirty martini with pickle juice instead of olive brine. You’ll need to dial up the pickle juice for it to shine through, so it uses double the pickle juice versus our dirty martini recipe. Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • 2 ounces gin
  • ½ ounce dry white vermouth
  • 1 ounce dill pickle juice (brine)

Best type of gin

A pickle martini will only taste as good as the gin you invest in! We recommend using a mid-priced gin here. Here are a few notes on types we like:

  • Malfy and Beefeater London Dry have a developed, botanical flavor that blends well in cocktails.
  • Locally distilled gin is a great option! In Indianapolis, we like 8th Day Distillery, Hotel Tango, and Big Heart Gin.
  • Avoid strong flavored gin. For us this includes brands like Tanqueray gin (very floral) and Opihr gin (spice-forward). These types of gin may not complement the pickle juice.
Dill pickle martini with pickle garnish

Serving a pickle martini

A tradition with the classic dry martini: it should be served ice cold. It’s not served with ice, so purists serve it in a chilled glass. Do what suits you here, of course! It’s not necessary, but it makes for an even more sensory experience. You can also serve a martini on the rocks (with ice) in an Old Fashioned glass: but we prefer ours straight up.

For a dill pickle martini, you’ll also want to serve it with a dill pickle or two as a garnish! Using a cocktail pick makes it fit well in the glass.

Cranberry Mocktail https://www.acouplecooks.com/cranberry-mocktail/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/cranberry-mocktail/#respond Thu, 12 Dec 2024 15:45:03 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=167610 This cranberry mocktail with ginger beer and orange is sweet tart and delicious with only 3 ingredients! It’s easy to whip up for parties and everyone raves!

Cranberry mocktail

When Alex and I are entertaining, we love having a signature drink that works as both a cocktail and a mocktail. Introducing our new favorite: this fun and festive cranberry mocktail! Often mocktails can taste like glorified juice, but this one tastes bubbly, sweet tart and delicious with only three ingredients.

It’s a ginger beer mocktail that has a hint of spicy complexity, and you can muddle in a little rosemary for a sophisticated finish. We first made this as a Christmas mocktail version of our Cranberry Aperol Spritz, but it also works in summer as a cranberry orange mocktail. It gets rave reviews every time we serve it!

Ingredients in this cranberry mocktail

Alex and I love mocktails almost as much as we love cocktails (we have over 300 cocktail recipes in our library). But often when we’re out and we order one, it tastes one note: basically like fruit juice! This cranberry mocktail is more interesting without the need to make fancy ingredients like fancy simple syrups. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 100% cranberry juice: We like using 100% juice because it’s naturally sweet tart and has a bright red color. Juice labeled cranberry cocktail has added sugar.
  • Orange juice: You can use purchased juice (without added sugar) or fresh orange juice for an even tastier cocktail.
  • Ginger beer: Ginger beer adds a nuanced, spicy kick to this cocktail and a bubbly fizz. Ginger ale works as a substitute, but it makes a sweeter drink.

Top brands of ginger beer

There are many types of ginger beer brands on the market. We love using small cans or bottles, since if you open a large bottle the bubbles subside after a few minutes. Here are a few notes on the top brands:

  • Q Ginger Beer: This is our top choice! It has great flavor and is made with real ginger. It comes in small cans that are perfect for a few drinks.
  • Fever Tree Ginger Beer: Fever Tree also has great flavor and is our backup! It’s made with real ginger and has no artificial sweeteners.

Also, here’s what to know about the differences between ginger beer vs ginger ale.

Garnish ideas

We garnished our cranberry mocktail with fresh rosemary and mint. If you’re making it as a Christmas drink, fall drink, or winter drink, rosemary is perfect. It also works in summer, so mint is preferable in the warmer months.

If you’d like, you can also add an orange slice to this drink as a garnish to make it even more festive!

Christmas Punch https://www.acouplecooks.com/christmas-punch/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/christmas-punch/#comments Thu, 12 Dec 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=116012 This delicious Christmas Punch recipe is fruity and delicious! Make it with rum for a punch with alcohol, or omit for non alcoholic.

Christmas Punch

Need a great punch recipe for the holidays? Try this Christmas Punch! The flavor is fruity and delicious, with a little sparkle from ginger ale. You can make it with rum for a punch with alcohol, or omit it for non alcoholic. Either way, it tastes incredible!

As two drink and cocktail experts, we’re big fans of punches and pitchers because they make it so simple to serve a crowd. Garnish it up with sliced citrus, rosemary branches, and cranberries, and it makes a festive centerpiece for any gather.

Ingredients in this Christmas punch recipe

This Christmas Punch recipe is easy with minimal ingredients, perfect for no-fuss holiday entertaining! When it comes to punch, we’ve found that it’s not any “anything goes” situation. After some careful testing and tweaking, we found the perfect combination of juices, carbonated bubbles, and optional alcohol. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Cranberry 100% juice blend: This blend of juices is available at most grocery stores, and typically blends grape, apple, and pear juice with cranberry juice. Make sure to look for “100% juice” or “no sugar added” on the label.
  • Pineapple juice: Pineapple adds just the right tropical flair; it’s great for using in punch recipes.
  • Ginger ale: Ginger ale adds just the right carbonation! It’s sweeter than ginger beer, which would also work but has in a spicier ginger flavor.
  • Rum: This makes it into a Christmas rum punch! But it’s just as good without as a non alcoholic punch.

Make it with rum or non alcoholic

You can add the alcohol right to the Christmas punch, of course! But if you’re entertaining with kids, it’s nice to allow drinkers to spike the drink afterwards. This offers most flexibility—you can serve both an alcoholic and non alcoholic punch at the same time!

  • Add the rum to the punch bowl. If you’re serving all adults, throw the rum right in.
  • Or, spike the drink afterwards! The better way to make an alcoholic Christmas punch is to spike the drink after you ladle it out of the punch bowl. This makes it work for both kids and adults! The best ratio is 2 ounces rum (¼ cup) to 8 ounces (1 cup) punch.
  • Or, serve it as a non alcoholic punch! It’s just as delicious.
Christmas Punch recipe

Three Christmas punch alcohol options

What’s the best alcohol for Christmas punch? Here are a few options and how it changes the flavor:

  • Rum: Aged rum, aka añejo rum, has notes of vanilla, coconut, almond, citrus, or caramel. White rum has a straightforward flavor with a signature fruity finish. Dark rum would make the color very dark, but you can use it if you like—it adds deep, caramel flavor and notes of cinnamon and spices.
  • Bourbon: Bourbon is also ideal for a Christmas punch! Bourbon adds spicy notes, with hints of vanilla and caramel.
  • Champagne or Prosecco: Or, go for a bubbly punch! Add champagne or Prosecco right before serving (see Holiday Punch).

Ways to garnish the bowl

The best part about a good Christmas punch recipe? All the garnishes! A good punch has some lovely garnishes floating on top. Here are some of our favorite ideas:

  • Sliced citrus: orange, lemon or lime
  • Pineapple rings
  • Whole spices: star anise, cinnamon sticks, or cloves
  • Rosemary sprigs
  • Fresh or frozen cranberries or raspberries
Christmas punch alcoholic

Serving notes to preserve the bubbles

This Christmas punch takes just a few minutes to throw together. But if you want to prep some items in advance, here’s what to do!

  • Chill the liquids in advance. Adding ice waters it down too much, so chill everything prior to serving.
  • Slice the citrus and assemble the garnishes. Make sure you’ve got everything on hand. Refrigerate the citrus until serving.
  • Add the ginger ale right before serving. You can pour everything in the bowl, but try to add the ginger ale right before serving. This way you get the best bubbles!

Cranberry Aperol Spritz https://www.acouplecooks.com/cranberry-aperol-spritz/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/cranberry-aperol-spritz/#respond Fri, 06 Dec 2024 15:29:33 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=167446 This cranberry Aperol spritz recipe is sweet tart, fruity, and even tastier than a standard Aperol spritz (we think)! It’s simple to make and looks stunning—the idea signature drink for parties or a cozy evening.

Cranberry Aperol Spritz

Here’s a cocktail recipe that’s so fun and easy, we want to make it in every season: the cranberry Aperol spritz! Using tart cranberry juice tones down the sweet Aperol, making a drink that’s fruity, balanced, and even tastier than a standard Aperol spritz (in our opinion!).

This one is so perfect for parties because you can pour it up right in the glass: no cocktail shaker required! It’s great for fall and winter (we first served it as a Christmas cocktail) but it honestly also works in summer: just add a orange wedge garnish!

Ingredients in a cranberry Aperol spritz

The cranberry Aperol spritz is a spin on the popular Aperol spritz, an Italian aperitif. The concept has been around for hundreds of years, but the Aperol spritz took the form it has today in the 1950’s. This spin simply adds cranberry juice, which balances the flavors in what can be a very sweet drink. Here’s what you need to make a cranberry Aperol spritz:

  • Aperol: Aperol is an Italian bitter (amaro) with a lightly sweet flavor and notes of herbs and citrus. It was invented in Italy in 1919.
  • Prosecco: A sparkling white wine from Italy’s Veneto region, known for its delicate flavor and light bubbles. You can use any type of champagne if desired.
  • Cranberry juice: We like using 100% cranberry juice for the brightest color and pure, tart flavor.

More about the spritz

The spritz is a drink invented in Italy that combines three ingredients: liqueur, sparkling wine (usually Prosecco) and soda water. You can make a spritz of any type using these two ingredients and any mixer of your choosing. The basic spritz ratio is 3 parts sparkling wine, 2 parts liqueur, 1 part soda water. This cranberry version omits the soda water and adds cranberry juice.

The most popular spritz is an Aperol Spritz, but you can also make a Limoncello Spritz, Campari Spritz, and  St Germain Spritz (also called the Hugo).

Cranberry Aperol Spritz with cranberries and rosemary garnish

Making multiple servings at once

The cranberry Aperol spritz is perfect for parties, and it’s easy to make several servings at once! Here’s what to know:

  • If you’re making 2 drinks, a mini bottle is perfect—it holds 187 mL or about 6 ounces! For 4 drinks, use a half bottle 375 ml (12 oz).
  • A 750 ml bottle of Prosecco is 25 ounces, enough for 8 drinks.
  • If you’re serving 8, mix up 1 ½ cups Aperol and 1 ½ cups cranberry juice. Into each glass, pour 3 ounces (6 tablespoons) of the mixture and top with 3 ounces Prosecco.

Garnishing a cranberry Aperol spritz

The cranberry Aperol spritz is a great fall cocktail or winter cocktail, but it also works in warm weather as summer cocktail, depending on the garnishes. If you want to take it over the top, try the following:

  • Throw in a straw. A gold straw work well here; it also helps to minimize dilution.
  • Serve with clear ice. This ice is crystal clear, with none of the cloudiness of normal ice. You can cut large chunks and they look just like a fancy bar! All you need is 24 hours. See How to Make Clear Ice.
  • Add a citrus wedge and frozen cranberries. Lemon or orange works great!
  • Add herbs. In winter use a rosemary sprig. If serving in summer, a sprig of thyme or mint would work perfectly.

That’s it! Of course, the garnish is what takes it over the top. All you’ll need is a few rosemary branches and some fresh whole cranberries. You can use the leftovers for holiday decorations like a table centerpiece or try them in our moist and citrusy cranberry orange bread.

Make sure to find 100% cranberry juice

The most important thing to note with the Poinsettia drink is this: make sure to find 100% cranberry juice! There are lots of variations of cranberry juice on the shelf, and many of them have added sugar. If you find bottles labeled cranberry juice cocktail: stay away! It has added sugars or high-fructose corn syrup for extra sweetness.

Alex accidentally bought the sweet stuff when making this cranberry champagne cocktail recipe. Sadly, it turned out tasted overly sweet and “fake” tasting. When we looked at the bottle: it wasn’t 100% juice! I dashed off to the store and we remade it with 100% cranberry juice. It tasted perfectly crisp and tart: exactly what we wanted! So make sure to check the label and find 100% cranberry juice for the Poinsettia.

Pouring champagne

Can you make a non-alcoholic Poinsettia drink?

You absolutely can make this Poinsettia drink without alcohol! All you have to do is substitute non-alcoholic sparkling cider, grape juice, or wine for the champagne and orange juice for the Cointreau. These days there are some great non-alcoholic sparkling wine options on the market. You could also try this Cranberry Mocktail with ginger beer.

Making mocktails or 0 proof cocktails is perfect for including people who don’t drink alcohol, pregnant women, or kids. Our kids always wants to drink what we’re drinking—so you could make up some kiddie cranberry champagne cocktails for the young ones!

Pomegranate Gin Cocktail

This post was created in partnership with POM Wonderful. All opinions are our own.
Here’s an impressive cocktail that’s pretty darn perfect, in our opinion: this Pomegranate Gin Fizz! The Gin Fizz is one of our favorite classic cocktails: sweet tart and refreshing, with a festive egg white foam. Take it over the top with this pomegranate spin: it elevates the sweet tart flavor and gives the drink a brilliant jewel-toned color! Here we used POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice to make this deliciously festive cocktail. It will impress absolutely everyone (we promise!): for the holidays or in any season.

Ingredients in this pomegranate gin cocktail

This Pomegranate Gin Fizz cocktail takes the classic Gin Fizz and steps it up a notch! The bold flavor of the pomegranate juice brings just the right compliment to the gin and lemon. Even better, it infuses the most beautiful ruby red color to the drink. Here’s what you’ll need for this pomegranate cocktail:

  • POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice
  • Gin
  • Lemon juice
  • Simple syrup
  • Egg white*
  • Soda water (club soda)

*Want a vegan substitute? You can use aquafaba, the liquid from a can of chickpeas! Just substitute 2 tablespoons aquafaba for the egg white.

Using pomegranate juice in cocktails

As much as we love whipping up classic cocktails, we also love making fun spins on the originals! Pomegranate is ideal for making fruity riffs on the classics. Our favorite juice on the market is POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice. Here’s why it’s great for drinks and cocktails:

  • It’s 100% juice. POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice contains only the juice of whole-pressed pomegranates and no added sugar, fillers or preservatives.
  • The flavor is ideal for elevating cocktails. It’s a little sweet and a little tart: perfect for melding with other flavors.
  • The color is brilliant. We eat and drink with our eyes! The deep ruby red color makes the perfect elevated cocktails for entertaining friends and family.

How to make an egg white foam: the dry shake

Adding egg whites in cocktails might seem retro, and it is: it’s a tradition that dates back to the 1860’s! The foam adds a frothy texture to the top of the drink and a creamy rich flavor to each sip. Classic drinks like the Gin Fizz, Ramos Gin Fizz and Whiskey Sour are traditionally served with this frothy topping. The key to an egg white foam is a special technique called a dry shake. Here’s how it works:

  • Shake the drink ingredients without ice first. This lets the protein in the egg begin to form the foam, instead of being diluted by the ice.
  • Then add ice and shake again. This cools the drink and strengthens the foam. Strain it into the glass and you’ll get a thick, white frothy layer. (As a note: citrus is required for the foam formation: so you’ll need the lemon in combination with the pomegranate.)
